Are we on the verge of the next “Heparin contamination scare”?
I woke up this morning and like I always do I glanced at the news feed on my phone. What caught my eye was a lead Yahoo News article that was posted overnight (August 7th) announcing that the FDA was expanding its recall on Valsartan and doing so in the spirit of protecting patients. As many of you know the recall is due to the presence of NDMA, which is classified by the World Health Organization as a probable carcinogen. The recalled drugs were manufactured at a specific manufacturer in China. This screams supply chain security…and coupled with the FDA referencing patient protection, we see the Rx-360 Mission Statement being played out in real time in the real world.
Rx-360 was founded almost 10 years ago because of what has become known as the “Heparin Scare”. Everyone involved rallied and worked together as an industry to look at gaps in the supply chain, benchmark against each other and implement best practices. It is now time to do this again. We now sit here today, facing a similar crisis. I don’t want any of us to sit back a year from now and say, “we should have been more proactive”. As Rx-360 Members, we need to be leaders. We need to be the experts. We need to educate and build awareness. People will take our lead. It’s easy for any of us to get caught up in our everyday responsibilities, but as Rx-360 Members, we have made a commitment to protect patient safety by sharing information and developing processes related to the integrity of the healthcare supply chain and the quality of its materials.
Our time is now. This is our rally cry. With all our Members working together, with one voice, we can and will lead, and not follow. Collectively we have the resources to create change.
